Boy with Werewolf/Vampire disease | 11/17/04
As reported by KSL TV (http://tv.ksl.com/index.php?sid=133271&nid=5)
A three-year old Idaho boy is searching for a cure from Polyphia - a
very strange and very scary disease. Only 200 people in the world have
the condition which was once linked to vampirism and lycanthropy.
Nicholas can only go out at night and spends all day indoors in heavily
blacked out rooms. Only 8 people in the US have the condition known as
Polyphia. Any sun on Nick's skin burns immediately with water
blisters forming. Sun damage can penetrate deeply into the skin and he
is also extremely anemic and vulnerable to infections.
As children with Porphyria get older, hair begins growing all over the
body as a defense against the sun, hence the association to werewolves.
Eventually he will be covered from head to toe with hair and his teeth
will turn black. In less enlightened times, people with this unfortunate disease were condemned as werewolves or possibly vampires. Doctors are working with bone marrow to cure his condition.
